The CARF AI Standard: What Behavioral Health Programs Need to Know for 2026
CARF has released its first-ever AI standard. For accredited programs, this isn't a suggestion — it's a requirement for continued accreditation.
The July 2026 Deadline
By July 2026, every CARF-accredited program using artificial intelligence in clinical or operational workflows must demonstrate compliance with specific governance standards. Most programs are currently using AI tools without the necessary policy framework.
1. Written AI Policies
Programs must have formal, written policies governing the selection, implementation, and monitoring of AI tools. This includes data security protocols and ethical use guidelines.
2. Client Disclosures
Transparency is a core requirement. Clients must be informed when AI is used in their care delivery, and they must have a clear understanding of how their data is being processed.
3. Human Oversight
CARF requires "human-in-the-loop" systems. You cannot let AI make autonomous clinical decisions without documented review by a qualified professional.
